According to the City, over 4,000 families had been living in Temporary Emergency Accommodation across eThekwini following the disastrous rains. On Monday, more than 100 homes were allocated, with more to follow throughout the week.
While it remains an ongoing challenge to relocate victims in flood-prone areas, the municipality estimates 1,200 houses to be built through the Cornubia Housing Development Project. By June this year, Mayor Cyril Xaba hopes over 1,000 housing units will be available.
“To accelerate relocation into family-friendly structures, we’ve agreed with the provincial and national Department of Human Settlements that while permanent construction continues, we’ll also build 400 temporary residential units to accommodate residents currently living in temporary emergency accommodation.”
