THE ARTICLE “President on corruption: the ANC is ‘Accused No 1’,” The Mercury, August 24. refers.
There is irony on the part of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s lament in his letter – corruption in SA amongst our leaders is not a revelation – it is de rigueur!
According to Transparency International, SA ranks among the world’s most corrupt countries.
Many citizens have resigned themselves to the fact that corruption is modus operandi of government officials, in other words, business as usual.
Of course, this corruption goes hand in glove with public sector inefficiencies which South Africans have to endure.
Among South Africans there is no belief that something will ever be done to redress matters and to request this is from our government has become tedious.
We could wax lyrical on corruption but a most appropriate quote would be: “There is no more dangerous menace to civilization than a government of incompetent, corrupt, or vile men.” Ludwig von Mises.
