Both the findings of Dr Donna Cawthorn and the Daily News’ Consumer Alert’s mini survey must be commended.
That “about 70 percent of mince, burgers, sausages, deli meats and dried meats on sale in South Africa could contain meat species and allergens which are not declared on the label” is unacceptable.
Businesses - especially butcheries and meat vendors - have an absolute responsibility to the public in terms of quality control, the prevention of cross-contamination and correct labelling of products.
The responses from some of those found ‘guilty’ in the survey express gross negligence and a lack of accountability which is tantamount to ‘making excuses’ – and should be treated with the contempt it deserves.
South Africa needs a strong food administration body which should prosecute businesses and individuals who are careless, negligent and irresponsible.
In view of the expose consumers must be vigilant and question the accuracy of the labelling of all meat products. The public must take heed of such unacceptable business practices and take their custom to butcheries and meat suppliers who are ethical and understand and respect the health, cultural and religious needs of our diverse society.
